GALAXY LIGHT AND POWER CHOOSES FOR-A FRC-7000 HD FRAME RATE CONVERTER
August 15, 2007
LONDON, U.K., August 15, 2007 - FOR-A Corporation, (IBC Hall 2, Stand #141) a leading manufacturer of video and audio systems for the broadcast and professional video industries, announces that Galaxy Light & Power LLC in London has selected its FRC-7000 HD frame-rate converter to perform high-quality conversions for live broadcasts, post production and mastering requirements. Galaxy Light & Power offers production resources for HD, motion pictures and television including equipment rental and standards conversion, transfers and technical production management.
Galaxy Light & Power Chief Executive and Senior Engineer, Andy Grant, closely evaluated all the HD converters of the market. He said, "At the moment, I consider the FRC-7000 from FOR-A to offer the best performance and versatility needed for this vital area."
The FRC-7000 demonstrated its ability to handle both interlaced and progressive material during a recent live broadcast of the "Concert for Diana." Galaxy Light & Power used two FOR-A FRC-7000s to feed a "clean" host broadcaster signal and an NBC-switched version of the concert via satellite to New York for distribution to North America. While all of the live performances were shot in 1080/25i interlaced, portions of the concert such as the insert films were made in the 1080/25PsF progressive format. "The FOR-A unit accepted interlaced and progressive images and provided virtually flawless conversion for both," said Grant. A third feed was also sent out in SD for affiliate stations without the ability to handle HD.
"Recently enhanced features of the FRC-7000 complete what FOR-A's competitors refer to as 'impossible tasks'," said Grant. "The unit converts cleanly between 23.98PsF or 24PsF to 25PsF and from 23.98 to 29.97 without using the 3:2 pulldown process. So, for the first time in history, we're transferring feature films at 23.98 frames per second into the NTSC or 29.97i HD environment without 3:2 pulldown artifacts."
Another reason for the choice was audio. Grant explains, "The FRC-7000 is currently the only converter that can pass Dolby E encoded signals. With many live music and sports events being made available in Dolby 5.1, together with it being the audio standard for the mastering of DVD/HD-DVD/BD, this invaluable function saves having to use a large amount of additional peripheral audio processing."
The FRC-7000 uses vector motion compensation processing to analyze and determine the pixel movement in each image frame. This is accomplished by comparing the movement in the frames before and after the ones being converted.
The FRC-7000's advanced scene cut detection automatically detects scene changes and turns off motion compensation processing so as to not affect the scenes before and after the frames being converted. A complete, new set of frames is then created in the required output standard.
